In addition to outstanding duck and dove hunting, Gabino’s Outdoor Adventures offers exciting walk-up Quail hunting for two unique and highly sought-after species. The diverse habitats surrounding Ciudad Obregón provide exceptional opportunities for both Gambel and Elegant Quail, making this one of the most rewarding upland bird experiences in northern Mexico. Each quail hunt is fully guided, with professional bird boys assisting hunters in the field.
Gambel’s Quail
The Gambel’s Quail is a classic southwestern desert species, easily recognized by its forward-curving topknot, scaled breast feathers, and chestnut-colored sides. Known for their strong running ability, these birds are typically hunted along fencerows, field edges, and patches of native vegetation bordering farmland. Coveys are often large—20 to 50 birds—and provide fast-paced and challenging shooting.
Elegant Quail
The Elegant Quail is a truly special bird, found only in a limited area of western Mexico. Slightly smaller and more secretive than the Gambel’s, it is beautifully marked with fine vermiculations of gray and buff, giving it a refined appearance. Unlike the running Gambel’s, the Elegant Quail tends to hold well, offering classic upland shooting reminiscent of Bobwhite hunting. Coveys are smaller, usually 6 to 15 birds. The hunting takes place on private ranches with native grasslands and brush. For collectors, this species is particularly prized, and Gabino’s Outdoor Adventures is one of the very few outfitters offering the opportunity to pursue this species—especially in combination with other premier wingshooting options.
